Why an apprenticeship could be your next career move

Careers advice

Applying for an apprenticeship when you already have a degree - is it possible? ABSOLUTELY!

There are many myths about apprenticeships, so, understandably, you are questioning whether you can do an apprenticeship if you already have a degree. Luckily for you, we have put the record straight on the common misconceptions surrounding apprenticeships, you can find out more in our Top 5 Myths About Apprenticeships blog.

Now, getting back to the question at hand, can you do an apprenticeship if you already have a degree? Absolutely! Whether you are looking for a career change or simply want to upskill your current job, apprenticeships are a great way to gain hands-on experience whilst also earning a wage!

Apprenticeships are for everyone – any time, any place, at no cost!

You can apply for an apprenticeship after university, college, or even high school. An apprenticeship is a great way to further develop your learning or improve upon your already established career.

On the other hand, if you don’t already have a degree or have not been to university – don’t panic! You can still apply for apprenticeships. In fact, an apprenticeship is a perfect way to kickstart your career!

Whether you have zero qualifications or twenty – you’re eligible to apply for an apprenticeship.

And the best part? You can advance further into more advanced apprenticeships and achieve higher-level qualifications. For example, you may start with Level 3 Team Leader or Supervisor and advance all the way up to Level 7 Senior Leader.

So, what's the catch?

The whole point of an apprenticeship is to gain new skills and experience, therefore, you simply can’t apply for an apprenticeship in a subject that you already have a degree. For example, if you already have a degree in mathematics — you won’t be able to do an apprenticeship in the same subject.

The only way you may be able to do an apprenticeship in your chosen field is by doing a level 7 – these are equivalent to Master’s degrees… so if you’ve already got a Bachelor’s degree, you could apply for a level 7 apprenticeship in the same or similar field if it’s available.
